Melon --- a 2D material beyond graphene

Abstract/Summary:
2D materials are under extensive research because of their unique properties. They have a wide variety of applications ranging from super strong materials 1, consumer electronics such as bendable touch screens2, solar panel3, transparent semiconductor chips4, DNA sequencing5, etc. In order to achieve cost effectivity and mass production goals, CVD synthesis of 2D material is needed. CVD synthesis can provide better quality materials, with properties such as better uniformity, 6 higher purity7 and larger size.8 It has become a favored method for making 2D materials. Therefore the goal of this research is to investigate the use of CVD to synthesize a unique wide band-gap 2D material called graphitic carbon nitride, also known as melon.;Borrowing methods used for graphene growth, Melon is grown on copper foil, followed by a wet etching process to release the material from the substrate. The released material then will go through a process, which removes most of the transition metal ions from its surface that are a result of the wet etching process. The purified 2D material then can be transferred to various substrates. The thickness of the synthesized material is less than 3nm. Raman spectrum shows similar features to bulk melon but with differences likely attributed to the 2D nature of the material. The crystal structures of 2D carbon nitride, including unit cell size and shape and layer to layer distance were measured and compared with the bulk. The presence of carbon and nitrogen in the CVD grown material was confirmed. The band-gap was measured to be 4.2 eV. This is significantly larger than the 2.7eV band-gap for bulk. The semiconductor nature of the material was demonstrated by fabricating field effect transistors.
