Abstract/Summary:
A greenhouse soil column study was initiated to determine the potential for upward soluble salt migration in reconstructed soil profiles. Three topsoil depth treatments were used over-lying coal mine spoil.;Net salt movement over time was downward in all three topsoil depth treatments; and no transfer of salts from spoil to topsoil was observed.;Columns were repeatedly wet and dried to induce salt migration; and soil solution was sampled over seven months using porous ceramic cups installed at depth intervals in the columns. Following the porous cup sampling phase, columns were broken down, and saturation paste samples were obtained at intervals throughout the profile for comparison with porous cup results.
