Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of two different probiotics with the performance of an antibiotic in broiler chicks. Body weight gain, feed efficiency, mortality and effects on the microflora profile of the crop and gastrointestinal tract were measured. Two trials were conducted in heated and lighted brooder batteries with equal numbers of male and female commercial broiler chicks in each pen. Each trial was conducted for 21 days. Significant microflora changes were noted in the crop and intestinal tract of the chicks receiving the probiotic treatments in both trials. No significant differences in body weight gain, feed efficiency and mortality were also noted in all three treatment groups in both trials. These results indicate that the beneficial bacteria, yeast culture and enzymes contained in the two probiotics may offer an alternative to routine antibiotic use in improving the overall health and performance of broiler chicks.
