Abstract/Summary:
Over the last ten years, researchers have targeted commercial and industrial buildings with technologies that not only help reduce energy costs and increase the performance of physical security and safety, but also improve facility management efficiency and building operations. Leading manufacturers are also working diligently to produce applied instruments and automated systems so that buildings can respond better to environmental stimuli or energy efficiency policies. Making buildings smart in terms of efficient energy utilization has shown promise for future economic savings and technical solutions for smart grid.;In this thesis, the design process for transforming a large-scale, 28-year old building at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) to a smart structure is discussed. The 3D model of the building, which is essential for designing a smart building, is simulated. Then the completed inventory of electrical and Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment is conducted and a model-based optimization is utilized to find the optimal number and location of the smart plug controllers in the building. Also, energy efficiency and demand response opportunities in Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) using Enlighted's technologies are discussed using. Finally, the energy and cost saving opportunity for leakage current is analyzed. The results show a potential savings of 360,600 kWh of energy annually from lighting load reduction, eliminating a leakage current of a plug load, and faulty operation of HVAC.
