Abstract/Summary:
This research proposed to explore a methodology, using multispectral image analysis and a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach, for producing a land cover classification of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, in central New Mexico. Field-collected spectral readings of six land cover classes were obtained in July, 1987, using a 4-channel radiometer. Spectral separability of these classes was established using one-way analysis of variance tests. LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper images of the refuge were examined and processed to establish a preliminary land cover classification. Several refuge maps depicting soils and vegetation cover were digitized and integrated with the images. Chi-square analyses were performed to assess significant differences among various land cover types and image classes. Conclusions were then drawn concerning the usefulness of this methodology for land cover classifications of wildlife refuges.
