This thesis is an inquiry into the nature of tourism and its impact on natural and cultural landscapes. The international dimension of tourism is explored, with specific consideration given to the following topics: social access to tourism and leisure, the tourism industry, tourism and leisure environments, and future trends in tourism. Geographies of space, place, and peoples are discussed as they are impacted by changing geographies of tourism. Ecotourism is then analyzed as both a rapidly emerging sector of tourism and as a potential tool for ecologically sustainable development. Case studies of Belize and Chile are conducted to document shifting geographies of tourism and ecotourism. Specific emphasis is placed on the status of the tourism industry, the condition and impacts of tourism to protected areas, and the obstacles and opportunities for the growth of ecotourism. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are issued for the future of tourism and ecotourism.
