Abstract/Summary:
High Priority Supplier (HPS) selection is key to efficient Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) implementation in new car model programs for North American automakers. This process, however, does not meet its stated objectives as reflected by customer satisfaction trends showing no significant improvement as compared to the Japanese automakers.;This evaluation study involved quantitative historical data analysis and qualitative research using focus group discussions and in-depth personal interviews of personnel involved with two large-scale car programs for model year 2000. Based on this study, the six factors identified that contribute to the success of the HPS selection for APQP implementation include sourcing, product definition, APQP workplan, selection metrics, cross-functional decision-making, and APQP implementation. Weaknesses identified were lack of adherence to timing, weak communication, inadequate cross-functional process support, and insufficient training. Recommendations for improving HPS selection include early identification of roles and expectations, specific APQP team and program management training, set performance metrics, and a recognition system.
