This project presents the soil classification map of the San Juan Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico to determine the wave amplification in a soil deposit induced by earthquakes. According with 1997 National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program Provisions soils are classified as soil type A to F. This analysis was undertaken using available boring data from different government agencies and private soil testing companies. The predominant soil classification found was site class E, which is described as soft soil, and covers 51.95% of the total area, followed by the site class D describes as stiff soil. These results imply that the San Juan Metropolitan Area is very prone to seismic wave amplification. Using the SHAKE21 computer program a site response analysis was performed to borings classified as C and E. The resulting amplification factors ranged from 0.5 to 3.5. These values were compared with the soil amplification factors of NEHRP Provisions. |
