Abstract/Summary:
This thesis investigated and tested the viability and effectiveness of youth-led summer camp programs as a framework for sustainability education including development and testing a hands-on food systems/sustainability program designed to engage camp counselors and their campers.;The study was based on a literature review on energy scarcity and related social, economic, and ecological degradation and on the role of summer camps as effective learning venues. It was further informed by the author's experience as a summer-camp counselor and administrator and training as a high-school social sciences teacher and by a food systems/sustainability program that was tested in Summer, 2010 at a Jewish youth-movement run residential summer camp near Liberty, NY.;Resulting from this thesis and the 2010 test program, and in cooperation with the camp's youth leadership and staff, a more comprehensive food systems/sustainability program will be delivered in Summer, 2011.
