Abstract/Summary:
A one-dimensional position-sensitive detector, which employs the lateral photoelectric effect, is used to measure the index of refraction for several different liquids. A theory of operation is formulated for using the position-sensitive detector to make index of refraction measurements and the theory is tested in the laboratory. The equipment was calibrated using various liquids with known indices of refraction and measurements were recorded for each sample. Using these measurements, real time refraction measurements were completed using soluble liquid impurities.
