Abstract/Summary:
A citation index consists of entries of authors' works, and their corresponding lists of bibliographic descriptions of other works citing them. A citation may serve one of many functions. This thesis develops a citation classification scheme that is more comprehensive than any previously proposed for automation, and automates the classification of citations using a linguistic semantic grammar. Results of the automated citation classifier, tested on a number of scientific articles, are reported.
