Abstract/Summary:
Wavelets and filter banks have played a very significant role in image compression over the last few years. The recent surge in multimedia applications has placed an even greater demand on researchers in this field to find better and faster solutions. This dissertation contributes to these solutions by addressing both the theoretical and implementation aspects of wavelets and filter banks research. Specifically, we make original contributions in the following areas:; In subband coding of finite duration signals, we present a new method for implementing the subband codec using circular convolution. This scheme eliminates visual artifacts and border effects in the reconstructed image and does not require any post-filtering.; Secondly, we investigate a wavelet-based multicarrier modulation scheme over non-ideal channels. The scheme exhibits a high level of robustness to intersymbol interference even in poor signal-to-noise ratio environments.; Finally, using network synthesis theory, we give a complete parametrization of orthogonal 2-channel filter banks and derive an efficient architecture for the class of half sample symmetric (HSS) filters.
