Abstract/Summary:
Mobile Satellite Communications has provided a solution to communications in remote areas or to users on the move. Current technologies allow a conventional pager to be used as a terminal on the MSAT satellite service. Using a two-way messaging system, customers are able to receive and reply to paging messages in cars, trucks, boats and in remote areas. This thesis will explore the demodulation algorithms for a burst demodulator at the Hub earth station to receive, demodulate, and decode return link, burst paging signals that have originated at the mobile end of the satellite link. The paging messages are short with no preamble for higher message capacity and efficiency. The preamble-less nature of the signal poses a great challenge in designing effective synchronization algorithms because it is impossible to acquire initial synchronization before a message arrives without the aid of a message preamble. Therefore, the goal of this research project is to design demodulation algorithms that will permit a high rate of message recovery with a burst, preamble-less, signal format.
