Abstract/Summary:
This thesis uses computer-based optical design tools to explore novel open multipass optical amplifiers and all-reflective free-space gyroscopes. Key features are the use of folded optical paths and, in some examples, segmented gain. The folded optical paths are helpful in minimizing device volume. The segmented gain is useful in discriminating against undesirable amplified spontaneous emission and distributing the heat load, thus improving both efficiency and beam quality. The optical amplifier design identifies a pathway to high average power, kilowatt output laser amplifiers, in a compact structure. The optical gyroscope design has potential as a low cost, low mass, compact, precise spatial orientation sensing element.
