Abstract/Summary:
By identifying, flexing, and developing a students' dominant style, areas of talent, and preferences within the Multiple Intelligences framework, one can then draw on this knowledge to enhance the adult learners' experience, toward a goal of higher proficiency. By applying MI theory to second language proficiency, it may be possible to make a link between them, the techniques we implement, and their appropriateness for accomplishing specific learning goals.; This study discusses the research that directly supports the objectives outlined above. Its presentation is a synthesis grounded on a range of research findings from diverse fields, including applied linguistics, foreign language education and cognitive science. The dissertation will focus on three areas of importance: (1) a review of Foreign Language Education research and application theories as they pertain to this topic, (2) MI and learning style preferences and characteristic features related to adult language learner strategies, and (3) the implications of this research, some suggestions for accommodation in the college classroom, and application on the treatment of the foreign language course and adult learner in higher education. The Practical Applications chapter includes a professional development component with theory and application on the concept of Strategies Using Metacognitive and Multiple Intelligence Training (SUMMIT) and the FIRE principle, sample of the Questionnaire Inventory in Language Learning, specialized course evaluations and commentary. Also featured is a review of the most salient features of proficiency and SUMMIT principles for instructors to incorporate in the curriculum with tips on activity planning, sample activity, and teaching techniques.; In the context of this study, I have integrated contributions from the field where they are most informative. These points serve as a framework or center of a wheel whose tangents move to that center as well as move from it. They are not to be viewed as the whole of any one person's research, but rather as components for the larger picture. This study will increase interest and knowledge in the discussion of Multiple Intelligences and learning styles and to develop applications of these features innovatively and responsibly in a proficiency based second language curriculum with a goal toward a self-directing, autonomous learner.
