Abstract/Summary:
The market economy China adopted in the past two decades, particularly in the 1990s, has pushed the Chinese news media into the market as the State cuts their subsidies.;To adapt themselves to the market economy, Chinese media have taken various measures, such as sideline endeavors and increasing their proportion of entertaining content and advertising. Some even went to the extreme of pornography and paid journalism.;This thesis aims to document these changes and identify the trends of Chinese news media under the pressure of the market economy. It concludes that although the market economy has not brought press freedom to Chinese media, it has laid a good foundation for ridding Chinese media from Party control as they become more and more financially independent of the State ... if they do not fall prey to mammonism.
