Abstract/Summary:
Performance analysis demonstrates that the significance of the feminine Chinese Classical Dance does not depend on cultural or historical analysis but on the analysis of performance qualities which allow the dance to communicate a complex, emancipatory representation of feminine identity across cultural and historical contexts.;Research on this subject starts by examining relations between dance, the aesthetic of Daoism, and Peking Opera. The intimate relation between these is the backbone from which the unique quality of Chinese Classical Dance can be tracked historically. Nevertheless, since historical discussion can not really explain the aesthetic value of the dance, a detailed analysis of performance elements and imagery is the more crucial evidence which justifies the preservation of Chinese Classical Dance. The thesis then reveals that without reference to philosophical content or enhancement of culturally defined costume and music, the qualities of the classical movements project a superior feminine attractive power which transcends cultural, historical or narrative contexts.
