| Ingeborg Bachmann frequently employs mythological subject-matter in her prose. As she deals with contemporary issues, like the impossibility of love and trust or the encroachment of technology on human lives, this is very surprising. We analyse three short stories exemplifying the inclusion of myths in the narrative structure. In contrast to traditional mythology, Bachmann's short stories show human beings as unredeemable. There is no help from the gods and, therefore, no hope in Bachmann's universe. Her myths are narrative devices without redemptive qualities. |
