Abstract/Summary:
Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970) is certainly one of the most important figures of Italian modern literature. His poetry, considered revolutionary in its time, was translated into German by such famous authors as Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan. This thesis examines these translations, approaching the subject from three different angles.; In the first part, theoretical and practical implications of translation theory and criticism are discussed, thus laying a foundation for the analysis of Ungaretti's poems as translated by Bachmann and Celan, which follows in the second part.; The observed similarities between the authors are being determined in a comparison of their poetics. The question of whether they belong to a common current in modern literature, and how this matter is to be approached by literary criticism, offers a final outlook.
