Abstract/Summary:
Cutler Hammer is a manufacturing company that produces electric switches for domestic and commercial use. This company needs to increase production in one of its manufacturing lines by over 200%. To incorporate the randomness in processing times and to model the interrelationship among the components of the system computer simulation was used. A factorial experimental design 28–4 was used to determine the best operating conditions. The factors selected for experimentation were: number of operators in the six workstations, number of machines in the testing area and number of work shifts. The experimental results revealed that all the factors and their interactions were significant. A regression model was constructed to predict the response variable (production output). Adding eight operators and an additional work shift was selected as the best alternative, resulting in savings of {dollar}105,061.2 per year.
