This work represents an interpretation of Christa, Wolf's novel Kassandra. While considering and reviewing existing literature, the author of this thesis positions herself within the framework of established scholarship but expands on one main theme and in doing so goes beyond existing interpretations of Wolf's message.; This thesis demonstrates that the novel not only gives a general warning about war but is very specific in giving a detailed account of wars and the events that leads to war.; However, the intentions and visions of the author go beyond being yet another warning voice. This thesis postulates that Wolf identifies one of the main reasons world history has been a repetition of wars and violence: traditional historical writing. Her concerns with the common writing of history as found in Kassandra, namely that it lends itself to a repetition of history, are presented to the reader. This work demonstrates how the novel itself presents a new and more adequate way of writing history as Christa Wolf sees it. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
