Abstract/Summary:
This study is an archetypal exploration of Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy using Joseph Campbell's taxonomy of myth. First, Campbell's ideas of the form and functions of myth, the monomyth, and Following Your Bliss are examined in terms of the other major theorists of myth. Then, the monomyth and the functions of myth in the lives Davies' protagonists are discussed. These main characters are able to successfully complete a monomythic quest as they struggle to integrate the positive and negative aspects of themselves into a cohesive identity. Each of them, Dunstan Ramsay, David Staunton and Magnus Eisengrim achieve integration by recognizing the functions of myth in their lives.
