Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the HIV/AIDS knowledge level and risk behaviors in Hispanic migrant farmworkers in west and southwest Michigan. A secondary data analysis was performed to measure HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and risk behaviors. Overall knowledge level and risk behavior scores were developed for further data analysis. A Pearson R Correlation Coefficient was calculated and showed that the relationship between knowledge level and risk behaviors was not statistically significant.;Coefficients were also calculated for age, educational levels, and number of months spent in Michigan first with the knowledge level index, and then with the risk behavior index. There was a weak, negative, relationship found between knowledge level and the age of the respondents (r = $-$.122, p =.021). A weak, positive relationship was found between knowledge level and years of education (r =.31, p =.00). There was a weak, negative relationship between the age of the respondent and years of education completed (r = $-$.35, p =.00). No significant relationships were identified between risk behaviors and the demographic variables.;The results of this study showed that migrant farmworkers had a high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge related to modes of transmission. Risk behavior scores showed high HIV/AIDS risk behaviors of multiple sex partners, alcohol use before sexual relationships, and low condom use.
