Objective To investigate in a district of Chongqing among migrant workers on construction sites the level of AIDS-related KAP characteristics, and to explore the intervention model of long-term health education on AIDS-related KAP among the migrant construction workers in order to provide scientific basis of prevention and control of AIDS.Methods Made construction sites for on-site in a district of Chongqing, and made the migrant workers as objects of study. Random sampling and convenience sampling were used in survey sample. Based on the current situation survey and qualitative research we did intervention about HIV/AIDS. Staff of local CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) had done intervention of migrant workers about AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes, behavior health education for one year, and then evaluate the effect of intervention. Forms of intervention were: holding a lecture every three months, putting up posters, providing promotional materials and condoms,playing propaganda films, displaying drawing boards which were easy to understand, site consultation, companion education, prize quiz and so on. After the intervention, we did further investigation of migrant workers about AIDS-related knowledge, attitude and behavior information, and then did comparative analysis. Results 1. General Characteristics: random survey was did in 3 construction sites,status survey covered 630 people, in-depth interviews of qualitative research covered 18 people. They were 16-66 years old, average 37.99 years old. Men accounted for 85.31%; The major of Marital status was married, accounted 84.32%; the major of education was junior high school, accounted 52.15%. 2. AIDS-related knowledge and behavior: migrant workers on construction site were lack of basic knowledge about AIDS generally.Their ability and sense of self-protection were wake. They held on AIDS discrimination and had low rate of condom use. The accuracy of 8 questionnaires about AIDS-related knowledge was16.34-58.75%; the rate of having commercial sex with FSW in last 1 year was 5.78%; the rate of condom use when having commercial sex last time was 57.14%. When having commercial sex in last one year, 34.29% of them never used condom, 28.57% of them use it sometimes; the rate of sexually transmitted diseases symptoms was 6.27 %, the rate of non-standard medical treatment was 76.32%. 3. The effects of existing interventions: After intervention, the accuracy of questionnaires about AIDS-related knowledge was improved to 26.83%-79%, the rate of condom use when having commercial sex last time was 87.88 %, other risk behaviors also reduced accordingly, but to a limited extent.Conclusion 1.The groups of migrant workers on construction site were lack of knowledge and skills about preventing AIDS, their sense of self-protection were poor. Dangerous situations like Extramarital sex, commercial sex, multiple sex partners and low rate of condom use were exist, besides they went between rural and urban, all the situation above make them vulnerable to AIDS and to be the bridge of Spreading from high-risk groups to general population. 2. The major of groups of migrant workers on construction site were young and middle-aged men, they were mobility and the level of economy was low. Long-term separation of family, psychological stress, risky sexual behavior, having sexually transmitted diseases, non-standard medical treatment, all the factors above were important and risk factors of AIDS. 3. Existing interventions have increased level of KAP , but the efforts are limited, establishing a more effective intervention strategies and approaches are urgent needed.
