Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore factors that influence exercise participation in adults with cancer. The purposive sample consisted of 143 adults with cancer, who voluntarily completed a 40-item survey entitled Factors Influencing Exercise Participation. Perception of exercise as beneficial was measured with the 29-item benefits subscale of the Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale (EBBS). Additionally, 11 items measured exercise participation, encouragement received, date of cancer diagnosis, treatment status, and demographic factors. Twenty-five percent (n = 36) of the sample reported exercising more than three times per week. Date of diagnosis was significantly associated with exercise participation. Significant difference in perceived benefits of exercise was found based on age, treatment status, date of diagnosis, and between exercisers and non-exercisers. Health care providers need to be aware of the benefits of exercise and encourage the adult cancer patient to pursue wellness.
