Abstract/Summary:
This project puts forward a prototype for the development of interstitial space, that is, the introduction of program into the long open spaces that border major roads and suburban communities. Through the introduction of an architectural intervention into interstitial space, it is possible create a symbiosis between residential suburb, building and road, one that actually improves the quality of life in the city.; Through a re-examination of the industrial building, appropriate design strategies for the development of interstitial space were found. As a bridge between major thoroughfares and residential subdivisions, the development captures a social agenda that can contribute to the quality of life of both the passing commuter traffic and the residential neighbours, while proclaiming its presence and that of the company housed there. The resulting project brings together the architectural qualities of the industrial building with the opportunities presented in typical North American urban design, in a prototype for the development of interstitial space.
