Abstract/Summary:
The general objective of this study was to present recommendations to the Galveston County Indigent Health Care Task Force Committee. Based on literature review, a multiple approach plan was proposed. This included (1) establishing a centralized immunization information system with the full implementation of vaccination registry, (2) setting up a mobile vaccination unit, and (3) establishing a faith-based vaccination program.; To examine the feasibility of the proposed plan, three distinct data collection methods were utilized: site visitation, interview, and telephone survey. Information obtained during these processes was analyzed as the project progressed.; The results indicated that with the currently available resource, the strong support from the Galveston County Immunization Coalition, and different community groups, a multiple-approaches plan would be doable and practical. Upon implementation of the plan, we can achieve and sustain the national Healthy People 2010 objectives for vaccination coverage (90%) in the Galveston County indigent population in five to ten years.; The following recommendations were then presented to the Galveston County Indigent Health Care Task Force Committee: (1) Establish a centralized immunization information system with the implementation of the ImmTrac registry aimed at full provider participation. (2) Set up a mobile vaccination unit in conjunction with the Jesse Tree to enhance community access to vaccination services. (3) Establish a faith-based immunization program to promote community demand for childhood vaccination. (4) Continue close partnership with the Galveston Immunization Coalition. (5) Further expand of vaccination delivery service with extended hours to include all GCHD clinics.
