Abstract/Summary:
Within the context of financial restraints and surgical innovations, there is a great push for surgeries to be performed on an ambulatory basis, where patients are admitted and go home on the day of surgery. Some factors limit the efficiency with which this occurs. Using a descriptive retrospective chart review, with Dorothea Orem's Self-care Deficit Theory of Nursing as a theoretical framework, this evaluation research study will look at the type and amount of narcotic analgesic administered in the post-anesthetic care unit and its association with the length of stay in the ambulatory surgery unit.
