Abstract/Summary:
This investigation employed Quasi-Experiment, one group, subjects as own controls, single blind study to examine the effect of electromagnetic therapy and social group as a treatment for individuals suffering from Fibromyalgia syndrome, particularly with respect to the effect of the disease on their self-perceived level of function. A second variable that was measured is locus of control to find out if the subject's personality had an effect on the functional performance. Magnetic therapy is the use of magnets to alleviate pain in numerous parts of the body. Fibromyalgia syndrome leads to pain and decreased function. Many treatments that have been in use by the medical community to ease symptoms of fibromyalgia have been ineffective. There are limited successful treatments for Fibromyalgia.;There were ten subjects that participated in this study and nine subjects participated for the entire duration. Subjects were scheduled for "treatment" twice a week, for a half-hour, for six weeks (twelve sessions: three weeks with treatment, three weeks without treatment) in a small group, socialization setting. Subjects were used as their own controls. The magnets were placed over the thymus (over the chest area).;This study's outcomes indicate that electromagnetic treatment is highly statistically significant in decreasing pain in individuals with fibromyalgia. The locus of control did not have any significance to an individual's function.
