Abstract/Summary:
Purpose. Estimate the impact of a symptoms self-management pro gram on knowledge, physical activity, diet, blood glucose and HbAlc among patients living with type 2 diabetes.;Population. 30 people with type 2 diabetes non-insulinodependent aged 40 years and older, living in the Bas-St-Laurent.;Methods. Experimental design with pre and post-test control. Both data collections were based on personal diaries to compile statistics regarding knowledge, physical activity, diet, blood glucose and HbAlc taken before and after the program. The symptoms self-management pro gram includes a group meeting with the nurse and the nutritionist. It also includes two individual meetings with the nurse. The paired t-test was used with the SPSS software student version 15.0 to analyze the research data.;Results. After 3 months, participants in the experimental group showed a significant increase in knowledge of 13.4% (p <0.05), a significant decrease in their average glycemia of 0.7 mmol / Lat dinner CP <0.05) and a significant decrease in HbAlc of 0.5% CP <0.05). In comparaison, the group control showed a non significant increase in knowledge of 8%, a increase of 0.1 mmol/L at dinner and a non significant decrease in HbAlc of 0.2%.;Conclusions. The symptom self-management program for people living with type 2 diabetes is a suitable tool for nurses. It gives patients with type 2 diabetes tools that help them avoid or delay the development of long-term complications.
