Abstract/Summary:
The prevalence of overweight and obesity has steadily risen in the past few decades. Data from the 1994–96 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals are used to examine the degree to which certain socioeconomic and lifestyle factors may contribute to this increase. The main focus of the study is the increase in food eaten away from home, however; many factors have been examined. The Chi-square test and the t-test were used during this study. Previous studies have reported a relationship between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the increase in obesity. This study supports the relationship of several factors with the increase in overweight and obesity, but does not support the effect of eating away from home in overweight and obesity in the United States.
