Abstract/Summary:
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between glycemic control, frequency of blood sugar testing and social or behavioural characteristics and attempt to contrast these relationships for those with insurance that covers self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) testing supplies to those without insurance that covers SMBG testing supplies.;This was a cross-sectional study that utilized the baseline data from the first 200 patients that completed a survey and blood work for enrollment into a prospective, randomized, control trial.;Overall, this study demonstrated little relationship between glycemic control, frequency of blood sugar testing and social or behavioural characteristics of people with type 2 diabetes. There was a clinically significant difference in HbAlc (0.37%; p < 0.05) between those who had insurance that covered BG testing strips and those who did not. Further research into SMBG would be required in order to make informed policy decisions.
