Abstract/Summary:
Public places form an important part of the urban landscape. However, the low usage levels experienced by some public places suggests our current design approach could be more effective. The influence of physical characteristics on the visual quality of the urban landscape should be re-examined as one approach to better understanding popular public places. This study analyzes visual quality using a known successful public place as a study site. Based on a literature review, an urban design theory will be selected and compared to the study site. If the theory can accurately describe the study site's physical characteristics, then there is support for its use in future urban design decisions. Greater research into the qualities of place may contribute to the improvement of future public places.
