This project presents the in-depth evaluation on the deck failure of bridge No. 2306 at PR-53, km. 3.6, Ceiba, Puerto Rico. This investigation included the reconstruction of as-built plans using different destructive and non-destructive methodologies, a structural analysis of its design conditions vs. the as-built condition, an analysis of the history of the inspection report, a discussion of the possible deficiencies in the construction process and recommendations for the repair of the structure. The distress in the deck was seen early in the life of the bridge. The various forms of structural distress, which included cracking of the deck slabs, were attributed to the failure to meet the design criteria regarding concrete quality and thickness of the slabs. Finally, demolition and reconstruction of the concrete decks of the bridge was recommended. Its design should be improved to withstand the design live load for Puerto Rico (MS-18 truck). |
