| The modern sit-down flush toilet has been a common fixture in bathrooms since the implementation of supporting sewer and water infrastructures. In North America and Western Europe, it is accepted as the ultimate means for healthful elimination and management of human biological waste (feces and urine).; This Master's Degree Project examines an existing, mass-produced artifact, the sit-down flush toilet, with the aim of identifying issues that can be readdressed in the design portion of the project. Historical precedents, relevant sociological, physiological, psychological and environmental issues, as well as ergonomic concerns, current product trends and manufacturing options are discussed.; The specific objectives of this MDP are to combine my background in ceramic with my industrial design experience. Through analysis of primary and secondary research a list of design criteria and a design direction are developed. The goal of the design portion of this project is to investigate one or several aspects of this common artifact from a contemporary point of view. |
