Abstract/Summary:
Recovering and reusing building materials can partially reduce the environmental impacts of the construction industry by decreasing the volume of the construction and demolition waste stream; conserving natural primary resource stocks and landfill space; and generating a new source of building materials, that are less energy and resource intensive. Used building materials are likely to become more valuable as resources become more expensive and more available as disposal options become more restrictive. Diversion and recovery of building materials from the construction and demolition (C&D) waste stream through the implementation of landfill bans, increased tipping fees, and deconstruction activities, has spurred the development of regional, national, and international used building material sectors.; There are numerous factors that affect the expansion of used building material sectors throughout North America. This study examines why there is such limited reuse of building materials by professional end-users with a specific look at motivations, marketing strategies, and barriers to recovering and reusing building materials in southern British Columbia (BC).
