Abstract/Summary:
This thesis discusses the material culture of historic Fort Whipple in Prescott, Arizona by analyzing a sample of artifacts collected from the landfill deposits below the fort, along Granite Creek. Previous research has established the significance of Fort Whipple primarily through the documentation of existing architecture. A study of the artifact bearing deposits associated with the fort is presented herein. Five distinct landfill loci were identified. Four trenches were excavated into each locus. Based on archival research and analysis of a sample of historic artifacts collected from each locus, two of the loci contain information on the diet and health of the soldiers stationed at Fort Whipple, and therefore contribute to the importance of the fort.
