Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the effect of chopped glass fibers and fly ash on the mechanical properties of high density polyethylene foamed plastics lumber produced by the counterpressure intrusion process.;The results showed that chopped glass fibers (reinforcement) and fly ash (filler) can be very effective in improving the properties of foamed plastics lumber. High concentrations of fly ash proved to be effective in improving the mechanical properties and reducing the cost of plastics lumber. Glass fiber was more effective than fly ash in improving stiffness. Plastics lumber containing higher concentrations of fly ash and reinforced with chopped glass fibers proved to be more effective in improving properties like creep resistance, bending modulus and peak screw pull out force, when compared to regular polyethylene lumber.
