Abstract/Summary:
Very few attempts have been made to investigate and analyze the phenomena of atmospheric icing and its negative effects on the performance and efficiency of wind turbines. The objective of the present study is to develop a computer code capable of simulating the shape and amount of ice which may accumulate on horizontal axis wind turbine blades when operating in icing conditions as well as the power degradation due to ice. The study also include the development of a software package for the performance prediction and design of horizontal axis wind turbines.;This study provides a tool to investigate and analyze wind turbines atmospheric icing, particularly, the prediction and simulation of ice in rime and glaze conditions, the flow field and particle trajectories calculation, thermodynamic effects, the ice accumulation and finally, the performance degradation of the iced wind turbine. It also gives the possibility of studying the effect of different parameters that influence ice formation such as temperature, liquid water content, droplet diameter and accretion time. The ice simulation involves four major parts: flow field calculation, droplet trajectory calculation, thermodynamic analysis and ice accretion calculation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
