Abstract/Summary:
In an effort to become an environmentally responsible institution, the University of Calgary (U of C) has taken several steps towards managing the impacts of its operations and activities on the environment. The U of C's current Environmental Policy was passed by the University's Board of Governors in 1995. The following year, the Environmental Management Committee (EMC) was formed to operationalize and uphold the commitments of the University's Environmental Policy. The EMC is responsible for coordinating environmental management activities on campus, including the implementation of the University's environmental management system (EMS).;The purpose of this Master's Degree Project (MDP) is to examine the theoretical concepts of polices, indicators, and reporting in the context of environmental management, and apply the lessons learned to the activities and operations of the U of C. This MDP represents three key actions taken to improve and advance the University's EMS: (1) the development of a set of Environmental Guidelines to reflect the current state of environmental management on campus and provide direction for future initiatives; (2) the selection of environmental indicators for monitoring, measuring, and evaluating the implementation of the Environmental Guidelines; and (3) the production of an environmental report for documenting, communicating, and providing feedback on the progress made towards implementing the Environmental Guidelines.
