Abstract/Summary:
There is little field data available on greenhouse gas emissions from active landfill sites. In addition, there is almost no data in literature on emissions from landfills in developing countries.; A mass balance of methane and carbon dioxide emissions at the active landfill site, Loma Los Colorados, located in Montenegro, Chile, South America was conducted. Higher organic and moisture content of the waste than is typical in North American landfills contributed to high landfill gas (LFG) emissions of approximately 0.1 Tg/year.; In the second part of the research, techniques for successful re-vegetation of landfill sites were evaluated. A collaborative experiment was conducted with the Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, Valparaiso, Chile to measure plant stress response of Cryptocaria alba and Schinus molle to LFG. Also, the reactive transport model, developed at the University of Calgary was evaluated and determined to be an effective tool for planning re-vegetation strategies for landfill sites.
