Abstract/Summary:
Medical devices integrated onto a network are susceptible to cybersecurity attacks due to absence of security software on the devices, older operating systems, hard-coded passwords from manufacturers, and being closed devices. The compromise of medical devices can possibly be fatal for patients and the healthcare community. The absence of mandatory regulations from the FDA for medical device cybersecurity is delaying the manufacturers from addressing the changes needed to improve security on medical devices. Applying security awareness training, training manufacturers' technicians, building security into medical devices, using supported operating systems, and FDA mandated regulations for cybersecurity in medical devices might be valuable for improving patient safety for medical devices.
