Abstract/Summary:
This research investigates three issues surrounding User Adapted Interface (UAI) technology: (1) the environment's influence on the performance of adaptation. (2) the relationship between user control and user adaptation, and (3) the appropriate mix of content and format adaptation. We explore the issues within the context of an electronic form system and an intelligent e-mail client. The results support the hypothesis that (1) adapting the order of the form fields to match the work strategy of an individual will improve the individual's performance provided that the environment is structured and consistent; (2) user control over adaptation is preferred because the user can maintain the system's interaction state within a region of user expectation; (3) proper UAI design can help bridge the gulf between the user's goals and the physical system thus helping the user complete the task more effectively and efficiently [RPM02].
