Reorganizacion del sistema de transportacion colectiva en un campus universitario: Caso recinto universitario de Mayaguez (Spanish text)

A broad study of the transportation system at the University of the Puerto Rico at Mayaguez was performed to identify areas of improvement. The area analyzed encompasses the Mayaguez Campus and its surroundings. The main analysis was focused on the transit system known as "Trolley del Recinto".; The trolley's schedules and routes were studied along with other complementary elements of the system. The analysis was not only limited to the campus borders but also extended to its surroundings. It is important to include adjacent areas because surrounding neighborhoods and commercial areas are directly related to the transportation in the university. The surrounding areas are necessary to define the relevant transportation system for this campus.; This project followed an iterative process. Initially, the planning stage was performed followed by data collection including surveys and field data. After this stage, the analysis was performed to redesign routes and schedules. The design was oriented to correct deficiencies and solve the problems found in the trolley system. This design was implemented and monitored during one semester. Several strategies were developed to consider the effect of traffic congestion along the routes of the trolley. In addition, several improvements are suggested to be made on other important complementary elements of the system. Finally, various recommendations are presented for the improvement of the transportation system as a whole.
