Security and management of an 802.11b prototype wireless network

Wireless networks are quickly becoming as prevalent as the more traditional wired networks. This allows greater freedom of movement combined with a mobile device or just cheaper installation with desktop machines. This convenience comes with a price though as managing these new networks demands different technologies, processes (methods), and equipment. Currently, security is the predominant management concern.; The Computer Engineering and Computer Science department at J.B. Speed has implemented a prototype wireless network for faculty and student use. Changes in technology developed a need to reevaluate the system in place. A redesign had to be made which altered the way security and management would be performed. Many options were pursued and finally a multi-faceted answer was implemented. With 802.1x authentication, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) server, and updated firewall settings the security was improved. New management and updating procedures are also proposed.; A Perl script was developed for updating and managing access control lists (ACL) on the server. This allows management functions to be performed with much greater ease and speed. This script additionally improves security by making changes to the system easier.
