Abstract/Summary:
The E-911 policy mandated by FCC on wireless carriers to enhance the security of users could in turn raise another significant concern. The fundamental technology that drives E-911 is the location tracking technology. The location tracking technology with its tremendous benefits can threaten the privacy of an individual. The privacy policies in place are not clear enough to protect the privacy of users and users are vulnerable to privacy attacks from various sources [3]. The research aims to address the awareness of a selected group of mobile phone users in regard to the E-911 policy. The awareness, views, willingness and decisions of mobile phone users in regard to the E-911 technology is addressed. The study is composed of a quantitative and qualitative analysis section. The quantitative phase involved the analysis of the survey results obtained. The survey participants include a selected group of mobile phone users. The qualitative phase involves analyzing how location tracking could threaten the privacy of mobile phone users and the importance of having clear policies to safeguard user privacy. The privacy laws mandated by FCC in regard to the protection of customer proprietary network information (CPNI) are analyzed through a detailed literature review.
