Abstract/Summary:
A new method using a genetic algorithm for optimizing fiber Bragg gratings with predefined fabrication constraints is proposed. In particular, the optimized gratings must have no phase shifts and they have to be relatively easy to fabricate with a conventional setup. The algorithm uses real-valued coding and defines gratings coupling coefficient functions as a squared sum of sine functions with different modes. It was successfully used to obtain solutions which are advantageously compared with those obtained by methods using the layer-peeling algorithm when the imposed constraints are taken into account. Also, it was shown that with proper modifications of its merit function and of some grating parameters, the algorithm can be used to optimize various types of fiber Bragg gratings.
