Abstract/Summary:
A review of current youth sport literature reveals important information regarding the core issues relating to youth sport programs from the perspectives of coaches, parents, and players but there is currently a lack of information from the recreation professionals that administer the programs. This study was conducted to gain insight from recreation professionals in the field of Parks and Recreation who face challenges with youth sport programming in their communities. The literature review reveals a lack of training, certification, and overall understanding of the recreation youth sport philosophy. In addition, prior research indicates that parents who are overly competitive can create long lasting impacts on their children. Children are dropping out of youth sport programs at earlier ages, which create long lasting affects leading into adulthood. Youth sport programs administered without positive philosophy, lack of coach training and certification, can create negative outcomes for children, parents and society. A survey was developed to analyze how recreation professionals are responding to these challenges.;Recommendations were developed that include a heavy emphasis on instituting youth sport philosophies for recreation departments, proper coach hiring, training, and evaluation, and appropriate parent involvement and support. Data was collected regarding the current practices of Parks and Recreation Departments on the core youth sport issues. A list of recommendations was developed to aid future youth sport professionals.;Recreation professionals can utilize the information and improve the quality of youth sport programs and the lives of children in their communities. These recommendations for youth sport programs will enhance the quality of programs offered which will benefit the participants and the parks and recreation departments.
