This action research project examined if a token economy in the seventh grade special education classroom would increase desired behavior. The study took place at a middle school in Southwestern Minnesota during the 2004/2005 school year. Three students participated in the study. Instrumentation included the A-B-A-B design and oral reflection after the study was implemented. Analysis of the data consisted of the following: (a) a tally of the total earned tokens per day, (b) the average amount of tokens earned per day during each intervention and non intervention phase, and (c) the percentage of growth in the amount of tokens earned in each phase. In addition, qualitative data obtained through student interviews were summarized. The findings of the study showed evidence of growth during the intervention phase of the study while the reflection supported positive ways that students had developed. |
