Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the legacy of family narrative and its influence on personal identity. By examining how artists Jen Blazina, Kara Walker, and Joan Lyons use imagery and text to address issues of identity- including elements of memory, family relationships, and history, either real or constructed - this thesis demonstrates that heritage through narrative, as it relates to the individual, is a powerful thematic element that has the potential to move a piece of art beyond the artist's personal experience to have a broader appeal and significance.
